First-year playbook for Afghan Hound puppy parents

Afghan Hound puppies are runway models with hound independence. Your growth chart pairs with coat honesty, recall realism, and training that respects a dog bred to hunt far from the handler.

After the estimate

Afghans grow into tall, lean outlines; adolescent awkwardness is common.

Coat changes silhouette; hands-on rib checks monthly.

Weight on young joints still matters; treat drift after growth slows.

  • Weigh every 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Monthly photos from above.
  • Log treats.
  • Limping needs veterinary attention.

Reading growth under coat

Line combing to skin on your schedule prevents mats that hurt.

They can seem aloof; socialization stays patient and sub-threshold.

Prey drive is high; leash habits are safety.

  • Measure food by weight.
  • Cooler walk windows in heat.
  • Recall on long line; off-leash is a training and legal question.
  • Teen regression is normal; simplify training.

What changes month to month

Puppyhood is not one stage. It is a stack of different problems and wins. Use this like a timeline, not a rigid rulebook.

  1. Phase 1
8 to 12 weeks: silky baby

    Routine, handling, gentle exposure.

    • Crate and potty rhythm.
    • Daily coat contact with food pairing.
    • Feet, ears, mouth tolerance.
    • Socialization at easy distances.
    • Start markers indoors.
  2. Phase 2
3 to 6 months: coordination + hound opinions

Leash skills before adolescent height wins.

    • Reward loose leash moments.
    • Wait at doors.
    • Continue stable-dog greetings.
    • Grooming rhythm professional or home.
    • Short reps, many rounds.
  3. Phase 3
6 to 18 months: teenage Afghan

    Mental work + coat discipline.

    • Daily training games; high-value rewards.
    • Recall on long line.
    • Watch weight as growth slows.
    • Early help if fear or reactivity appears.
    • Limit repetitive high jumps on hard surfaces while young.
  4. Phase 4
18 to 36 months: slow maturity

    Adult coat and habits.

    • Exercise per vet guidance.
    • Keep measuring meals.
    • Continue training for life.
    • Discuss prevention your vet recommends.

Breed history

Where Afghan Hounds come from

Afghan Hounds were developed in Afghanistan and surrounding regions as coursing hounds able to work cold mountain terrain and hot desert edges with stamina and independence.

Their long coat was practical in harsh climate; show coats today are a grooming commitment.

Modern Afghans are dignified companions; underestimating hound wiring creates “stubborn” labels that are really motivation questions.

How the Afghan Hound calculator works

1

It uses age and current weight

The calculator uses your puppy's current age and weight to estimate adult size. Because puppies grow fastest early on and then slow down as they mature, the estimate adjusts for the stage of growth your Afghan Hound is in.

2

It compares against typical breed growth

Afghan Hounds are usually close to full size by around 17 months. As your puppy gets older and more of its growth is already complete, the estimate usually becomes more reliable.

3

It checks the estimate against the usual range

Most adult Afghan Hounds fall within a typical weight range of 50-60 lbs. You can use the calculator for younger puppies, but estimates are usually more accurate after about 12 weeks.
