First-year playbook for Whippet puppy parents

Whippet puppies are couch missiles. Your chart should sit next to burst-and-rest exercise style, recall before squirrel season, and warmth planning because shivering is their love language.

After the projection

Whippets often look lean; your vet confirms healthy condition, not internet opinions.

Teen ranginess is common before adult muscle arrives.

Weight can climb quietly if sprint exercise drops but bowls stay full.

  • Weigh every 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Monthly photos.
  • Log treats.
  • Any lameness after hard play needs vet input.

Reading growth on a sighthound

Rib visibility can be normal on some individuals; muscle and waist tell the story with your vet.

They feel cold; shivering means change the plan.

Prey drive is not optional; leash habits are safety.

  • Measure food by weight.
  • Jackets in cold weather.
  • Recall on long line; avoid off-leash near traffic.
  • Soft surfaces for wild puppy play when possible.

What changes month to month

Puppyhood is not one stage. It is a stack of different problems and wins. Use this like a timeline, not a rigid rulebook.

  1. Phase 1
8 to 12 weeks: fragile speed

    Routine, warmth, gentle exposure.

    • Crate and potty rhythm.
    • Handling for nails and mouth with food.
    • Socialization at easy distances.
    • Indoor recall games.
    • Limit reckless jumping while bones mature.
  2. Phase 2
    3 to 6 months: coordination

    Leash + recall foundations.

    • Reward check-ins.
    • Long line work when appropriate.
    • Continue stable-dog greetings.
    • Short reps, many rounds daily.
    • Dental tolerance training.
  3. Phase 3
6 to 14 months: teenage Whippet

    Channel speed safely.

    • Sniff walks plus allowed sprint outlets in safe spaces.
    • Never trust off-leash near roads or wildlife.
    • Watch weight as growth slows.
    • Mental games daily.
    • Heat and cold planning every outing.
  4. Phase 4
14 to 24 months: young adult

    Rhythm matures.

    • Exercise per vet guidance.
    • Keep measuring meals.
    • Continue recall practice for life.
    • Discuss cardiac auscultation timing with your vet if recommended.

Breed history

Where Whippets come from

Whippets were developed in Victorian England as smaller working-class sighthounds able to race and course on weekends then live quietly at home.

They are Greyhound cousins in a portable size, built for acceleration rather than all-day labor.

Modern Whippets are sprinters; off-leash risk and cold sensitivity are breed truths, not personality flaws.

How the Whippet calculator works

1

It uses age and current weight

The calculator uses your puppy's current age and weight to estimate adult size. Because puppies grow fastest early on and then slow down as they mature, the estimate adjusts for the stage of growth your Whippet is in.

2

It compares against typical breed growth

Whippets are usually close to full size by around 12 months. As your puppy gets older and more of its growth is already complete, the estimate usually becomes more reliable.

3

It checks the estimate against the usual range

Most adult Whippets fall within a typical weight range of 25-40 lbs. You can use the calculator for younger puppies, but estimates are usually more accurate after about 12 weeks.
